Introduction

This classroom activity and assessment gauges whether students can source and contextualize a document. Students first examine a news article from July 1898 about United States annexing Hawai’i as a territory. Students then analyze four historical facts and determine which one might lead them to question the reliability of this article as evidence of how Hawaiians felt about becoming a territory of the United States.
