Unit Plan Grade 6 - Hidden Voices ELA Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in U.S. History
- Grade Level 6th-8th Grade
Introduction
This Grade 6 Mini Unit, The Influence of Queen Lili‘uokalani, elevates the story of Queen Lili‘uokalani as she leads her people through a tumultuous and pivotal point in Hawaiʻi’s history. The unit also focuses on the lasting impression she has on her people and culture. The anchor text of the mini unit is Jane Recker’s article “How the Music of Hawaiʻi’s Last Ruler Guided the Island’s People Through Crisis.” The text highlights Queen Lili‘uokalani’s life and her role as the last monarch of Hawaiʻi as well as how she leveraged music during her reign.
The Hidden Voices project has evolved to encompass a multidisciplinary approach so that the contributions and accomplishments of underrepresented groups are incorporated across all subjects and students’ learning experiences. These new resources align to the chancellor’s priorities and commitment to providing culturally responsive instructional materials and practices to better represent New York City’s rich ethnic and cultural diversity.
