Introduction

This Grade 4 Mini Unit, Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Contributions and Achievements, highlights historical and contemporary Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who helped shape the United States by breaking barriers and making a difference in their fields. The mini unit centers around Amazing: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Inspire Us All by Maia and Alex Shibutani and Dane Liu. In this text, the writers explore thirty-six Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who, through their achievements, activism, and inspiration, made undeniably positive impacts in this country and the world.
The Hidden Voices project has evolved to encompass a multidisciplinary approach so that the contributions and accomplishments of underrepresented groups are incorporated across all subjects and students’ learning experiences. These new resources align to the chancellor’s priorities and commitment to providing culturally responsive instructional materials and practices to better represent New York City’s rich ethnic and cultural diversity.
